KEEPING YOUR JEWELLERY CLEAN

How It Works

Silver is a great precious metal to choose for keepsakes and memorial Jewellery and does not need much care.

Tarnishing

Most silver will usually tarnish eventually. This often turns the silver black, brown or dark grey. The tarnishing could also look greenish or blueish in colouring due to the hue caused by the copper content of the jewellery. Silver will tarnish faster under certain conditions. Sulphur, humidity, air quality (living near the sea) and even body chemistry. Body oils will make your jewellery tarnish.

Silver  jewellery can be polished with a silver polishing cloth but please avoid the resin area. We don't recommend  you use an ultrasonic cleaner or leaning bath because the liquid/chemicals may damage the resin. Most local jewellers can polish the piece for you and will take care to protect the resin.

Some Silver is Rhodium plated, which makes the jewellery tarnish-free. this will fade over time and your jewellery may become patchy. these products need to be recoated by a specialist who can protect the resin during the process. Here at Keep Them Close we use Argentium 935 Silver when possible. It is 1% purer than Sterling Silver, therefore containing less copper and resulting in being more tarnish-resistant.

Scrapes & Scratches

Try to avoid bumping your piece as this could damage it. A professional jeweller will be able to repair scratches but be sure to tell them your jewellery contains resin.

Resizing

Silver rings with resin can easily be enlarged up to one UK size or half US and EU size. To enlarge anymore than these will need to be annealed to avoid the silver cracking. a professional silversmith may be able to do this for you by using a ThermoGel to protect the resin but it can cause damage and discolouration. The same goes for a size reduction. It may be safer and cheaper to have us remove the resin and set it in a new ring for you. Please get in touch with us.

When Silver Jewellery has been damaged.

If your piece has become damaged then your product may need to be remade from scratch. We can usually save the resin and reset it in a new piece of jewellery for you.

Please see our resin care instructions if the resin is also damaged.
